In a movie called Mission Impossible, Tom Cruise used a series of high-tech eyeglasses which is able to shoot, transmit images and display confidential information. Now, a similar high-tech glasses will bring good news for millions of visually impaired people. Scientists in U.S. have developed a liquid crystal optical glasses, you can obtain a better vision than normal people by simply adjusting the knob on the frame to change the focal length. Scientists predicted that this technology will open the door to develop intelligent glasses. This latest technology is the invention of the University of Arizona USA and it has now been delivered to the state Academy of Science for invention identification.
The biggest difference between liquid crystal glasses and ordinary glasses is on the lens. Currently whether the shortsighted glass or hyperopia glass on the market, their lenses are mostly solid glass and resin, which means they only have a fixed focal length. If the vision got better or worse, the user would have to get a new one. The liquid crystal cheap glasses lens consist of two ultra-thin glass-coated liquid crystalline. The crystal is exactly the same as those on the computer screen. The crystal molecule is rearranged so as to change the transparence and focusing capability through changing the intensity of current flowing through the crystal.
In the identification paper the inventors said, the liquid crystal in the lens is a concentric structure. When the feeble current flows through the lens, the crystal in the lens will shrink or swell in less than one second. Thus change thickness of the crystal layer in various positions, thereby change the lens focal length.
In the trial, the model who wears such glasses can not see the picture being 30 cm far away from him. The liquid glass makes changes in its focus by adjusting the button on the frame. In the end, the models can see pictures clearly. In the tests among ordinary people, such glasses have also achieved good results.
Scientists predict that this technology may replace all glasses that make up visual impairment in some day. By adjusting the current strength, the liquid crystal of the lens can transform a variety of different focal length effects. This means it is able to freely transfer between nearsighted glass and farsighted glass. The crystal forms an even thickness which becomes a mat gloss after the current through the lens is shut off.
The inventor believes that this technology will be at least replace the bifocal glasses that has been currently widespreaded. In addition, glasses manufatured by this technology will particularly be suitable for drivers to increase the driving safety in the future. If combined with the technology of controlling the current automatically and the new products will be absolutely free from manually operation to become the real smart eyeglass frames.
